Anti-Social Cocoon

2020

The work considers an additive technique for implanting an artificial device that extends a body region while also improving specific interactions with a counterpart. A creative production with a playful and speculative tone.

  • Anti-Social Cocoon explores the idea of connecting through an organ and forming a one-on-one relationship. The work is based on a harmonious relationship. A partnership in which the couple grows into one being in which communication between the two is secure and committed. The use of the cocoon and tubes represents commitment and connection. The two elements enable the couple to disconnect from the turbulence of the outside world. While the cocoon serves as protection and isolation, the tubes allow clear and distinct communication. The wearable explores the limits and durability of a relationship over time.

  • Maison Margiela and Phantom of the Opera inspired the haute couture and emotional aesthetics. The connection of the tubes dominantly influenced by Abramovic and Ulay's "Relation in Time" performance. The setting takes place in populated an area "The Timesquare in New York City" as the couple challenges and enjoys being anti-social in social situations. Our priority, setting the value of communication to keep in touch as we explore the vast disconnect nowadays. Nowadays, individuals disconnect as they desire too much of "next best" or "the next person" they will talk to - forgetting to be in the moment and draw the attention to the people around you.

  • Anti-social cocoon connects the tubes, which allow for exceptional sound delivery, and masks on a short distance since the couple are stuck together to mutually solve problems. Masking expressions create tension between physical and verbal communication. The auditory focus on one's voice provides a sense of ease, protection, and strengthens verbal communication. Tubes allow the couple to whisper but hear each other loud and clear.

  • ‘Adhocism’ is a concept of action that results in hybrid systems that combine pre-existing systems with new functions and attachments.

The work challenges Designers to transition into a jeweler who makes handcrafted and custom-made pieces, and a surgeon who cuts, reassembles, sutures, and sews a newly created body together.

  • This project was a partner work with Anais Antoine.
